Besta Palace in Teglio (SO) – analysis
Geological and geo-technical tests were carried out to analyze the adjacent area to the building for seismic risk according to Italian national and regional Seismic Codes including sub-stratic rock analysis in order to create data concerning the building’s seismic risk.
The following operations were carried out:
- refracted seismic analysis to verify the average depth of sub-stratic rock;
- MASW analysis – ReMi to calculate the VS30 parameter which represents the average speed of propagation of cutting waves (S) within the first 30 metres of depth;
- H/V analysis to highlight seismic resonance and create an estimation of the frequency with which earth movement can be amplified as a result of such phenomenon.
Structural diagnosis was carried out according to the problems the building showed up, in particular, an evident deformation phenomenon and substantial cracking of vaults in certain rooms as well as a disturbing vibration caused by visitors moving around the attic and higher floors. Use of the building and current state of repair were evaluated along with the critical areas of deformation and cracking. On the basis of these sets of preliminary data, the diagnosis was drawn up featuring two distinct operations: the analysis of the wooden attic structure static conditions on the rear wing (carried out in 2007-2008) and the analysis of the masonry vaults in the rooms adjacent to the main façade (carried out in 2009- 2010). During this operation, a structural monitoring system was installed and managed over a long period. The data was logged for 10 years thus creating a wide database suitable for the purpose of statistical analysis.
