Trieste maritime station: seismic vulnerability assessment

A new prestigious assignment has been awarded to Foppoli Moretta e Associati by the Port System Authority of the Ports of Trieste and Monfalcone, following a two-stage tender process involving prequalification and the subsequent evaluation of the most economically advantageous offer. FMeA was selected as the successful bidder, also achieving the highest score in the technical evaluation.
The assignment concerns the Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of the Trieste Maritime Station / Palazzo dei Congressi.
The building, located along the seafront just beyond Piazza Unità d’Italia, on the Bersaglieri pier, is undoubtedly one of the defining elements of the city’s coastal skyline. It is also one of the most significant examples of functionalist architecture of the last century, recognized as early as 1933 in the magazine Emporium as one of the five works that marked the advent of modern architecture in Italy, alongside, among others, the Lingotto in Turin and the Novocomum by Terragni in Como.
Construction took place in phases, beginning in 1911 to accommodate warehouses, reaching its current size as a maritime station in 1930, and arriving at its present state following internal renovations that transformed the first floor into the Palazzo dei Congressi.
The assignment received from the Port System Authority initially involves analyzing the construction phases, performing a laser-scanner survey, and developing a BIM model with the identification of all structural components. This is followed by the verification of seismic vulnerability, completed with recommendations for any interventions deemed necessary to achieve the building’s seismic improvement and/or upgrade.
