GPR AND ULTRASONIC PULSE-ECHO TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE MONTE ANTENNE FORT

Foppoli Moretta e Associati recently carried out scientific consultancy on behalf of the CNR applying non-invasive diagnostic methods on historic walls in the heart of Villa Ada, in Rome
As part of a research project promoted by the National Research Council (CNR) in collaboration with Roma Tre University, specialized scientific consultancy was provided for the diagnostic analysis of the masonry structures of Forte Monte Antenne, located in the Parioli district, within Villa Ada.
The project focused on the combined application of two cutting-edge, non-invasive diagnostic techniques: ground penetrating radar (GPR) and ultrasonic pulse-echo (UPE). These tools allow for the investigation of the internal structure of the masonry without the need for destructive interventions, providing a detailed overview of its state of conservation and any hidden critical issues.
Fort Monte Antenne is one of fifteen forts built in the second half of the 19th century to defend the capital, immediately after the unification of Italy. These structures, often abandoned or underused today, represent a valuable historical and architectural heritage. In particular, advanced diagnostics can contribute to their conservation and enhancement, providing a solid knowledge base for future restoration or redevelopment projects.
The investigations, integrated into the broader CNR research program, demonstrate how the synergy between advanced technologies and scientific expertise can be crucial in addressing the challenges of cultural heritage conservation.
