Seismic vulnerability assessment of Sirmione Castle (BS)

Foppoli Moretta e Associati has been commissioned by the Lombardy Regional Directorate of Museums to carry out the seismic vulnerability assessment of the Castle of Sirmione (BS).
As a first step, preliminary activities have been carried out to assess the condition of the drawbridge structures of the southern ravelin and to monitor existing cracks. These investigations are aimed at developing a comprehensive understanding of the building and its structural components.
The Castello Scaligero of Sirmione, located on Lake Garda, is one of the most spectacular and best-preserved lakeside fortifications in Italy. It was built after the mid-14th century and takes its name from the Della Scala family, who ruled over Verona and its territory between the 13th and 14th centuries. Its design follows a typology similar to that of contemporary fortifications in the area, such as the Castle of Ponti sul Mincio, which our company extensively analyzed and consolidated a few years ago.
The operations carried out in recent days were performed using a “spectacular” rope access and positioning system—a methodology in which FMeA specializes, having previously worked on other major monuments such as the Torre del Bramante in Vigevano, the Castle of Arco in Trento, and the Torrazzo of Cremona.
The next operational phase, planned for the coming month, will involve analyzing all available documentation and conducting masonry tests aimed at achieving a thorough understanding of the structure.
