Reopened after the 2012 earthquake, the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Fabbrico (RE)

The repair, restoration, and consolidation works on the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta in Fabbrico (RE), severely damaged by the May 2012 Emilia earthquake, were recently completed. The structural design was carried out by Foppoli Moretta e Associati, working together with a team of local architects: Alessandro Ribaldi, Sandra Losi, and Lisa Accorsi.
The design phase and the acquisition of the necessary authorizations (following the objectively complex procedures for post-earthquake interventions) required a period from November 2014 to May 2017.
The correct design approach was based on the results of a detailed diagnostic campaign, which made it possible to identify the damage mechanisms triggered by the earthquake and to determine the structural layout and the mechanical characterization of the masonry. In particular, the damage observed on the church vaults proved to be highly significant, much of it caused by a heavy reinforced concrete beam previously installed on the extrados of the vaults, evidently intended as a structural support. In practice, however, this beam proved highly damaging for the building and was therefore removed in a very delicate intervention.
The construction site, started in November 2017 and completed in May 2019, allowed close and systematic observation of the building, which was essential for defining the construction details of the intervention, designed and executed with great care. The works will be completed shortly with the installation of a new heating system.
