Crack pattern survey and monitoring of palazzo Farnese in Roma

The structural monitoring system project for Palazzo Farnese in Rome was delivered on October 25. Following a thorough selection process, Foppoli Moretta e Associati was commissioned by the Service de Travaux et Bâtiment français en Italie (STBI), an office of the Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires Étrangères – Ambassade de France en Italie, to update the crack pattern survey and to design a structural monitoring system.
Palazzo Farnese is one of the most prestigious buildings in Rome, constructed between 1515 and 1589 in multiple phases that involved some of the most prominent architects of the time: Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, Michelangelo, Vignola, and Giacomo Della Porta. Since the late 19th century, the palace has housed the French Embassy.
The survey was delivered both in traditional form and digitally, allowing interactive, quick, and effective access to the information. The survey made it possible to identify the most significant phenomena, guiding the design of the new structural monitoring system aimed at controlling both static and dynamic parameters. The system will be continuously managed and will allow the monitoring of the building’s structural movements, defining both acceptable and alarm thresholds. Based on data collected over multi-year periods, it will also enable the interpretation of the observed phenomena from both a statistical and structural perspective.
