New high-resolution equipment for non-destructive testing

To carry out increasingly detailed and precise investigations, Foppoli Moretta and Associates has acquired new diagnostic instruments, which allow the examination of concrete and masonry without causing any disturbance to the structural elements, using in-depth radar inspections (GPR – Ground Penetrating Radar) and ultrasonic testing.

New high-resolution equipment for non-destructive testing

In particular, the RADAR operates using the new SFCW (Stepped-Frequency Continuous-Wave) principle. Unlike traditional radar systems, which use electromagnetic waves at a single frequency (lower frequencies for greater depth, higher frequencies for surface details), this system works over a frequency range of 400–6000 MHz, allowing clear results at different depths. For example, it is possible to analyze reinforced concrete columns and beams, detecting multiple layers of reinforcement up to a depth of 65 cm. A powerful post-processing system then enables precise 2D and 3D imaging of the investigated elements.

The Ultrasonic Pulse Echo technique sends ultrasonic waves with a frequency range of 20–80 kHz into the structural elements and records their reflections. Here too, the data can be post-processed to obtain clear images of material defects, such as, in reinforced concrete, demineralization, cover detachment, or gravel voids.
