Diagnostic surveys at the Church of S.Giuliano in Genova

On behalf of the MiC Regional Secretariat for Liguria, Foppoli Moretta e Associati recently carried out a survey campaign at the Abbey of San Giuliano in Genova.

Diagnostic surveys at the Church of S.Giuliano in Genova

Part of a larger building complex, the Church of San Giuliano is located on the southern side of the eponymous abbey, the result of numerous expansions and modifications carried out over time. Today, the San Giuliano complex exhibits clear historical stratification, yet maintains a unified appearance due to late 19th-century interventions, later reinforced in the interiors and extended to the exterior in the early 20th century following the opening of Corso Italia.

Instrumental surveys were carried out on the structures, including resistograph tests on the primary and secondary timber framing of the presbytery and apse roofs, dynamic characterization of the tension state of the metal tie rods in the presbytery and apse, exploratory openings in the masonry to directly assess the condition of metal tie rods embedded in the apse walls, and video-endoscopic investigations.

This survey campaign supports the design of the consolidation and restoration interventions planned for the church.
