Diagnostic survey of the wooden bell tower at San Romerio church, Brusio (CH)

As part of the “Restoration and Consolidation of San Romerio Church in Brusio (CH)” project, Foppoli Moretta e Associati recently conducted an assessment of the conservation state of the wooden bell tower structure.
The site inspection revealed interesting details, such as dates engraved on the observed elements, which can be associated with the year of construction or, more specifically, with the year of reconstruction, as in the case of the spire. A detailed inspection of the wooden bell tower was carried out at critical points, such as joints and supports, using Resistograph instrumentation, complemented by moisture measurements to obtain a more complete understanding of the structure’s overall conservation state.
This investigative work made it possible to identify which elements, based on the density profiles and associated areas of decay, are in good condition and can therefore be restored, and which require structural consolidation. In this specific case, it was observed that the general condition of the wooden bell tower (dating from the 17th–19th centuries) is good and only requires general tidying. The decay is concentrated in the two supporting beams, which will require intervention.
