Diagnostic investigations on the wooden load-bearing structures of Villa Migliavacca, home of the municipal offices of Introbio (LC)

The municipal offices of Introbio are housed in Villa Migliavacca, a building designed by Ulderico Bottoli at the behest of Antonio Migliavacca and constructed between 1911 and 1914. The villa reflects the historicist fashion of the time, combining renaissance and medieval elements inspired by 15th-century Milanese architecture.

Within this context, Foppoli Moretta and Associati carried out an assessment of the load-bearing timber structures of the floors.

The characteristics of the structures were determined through visual inspection, allowing the evaluation of their state of preservation and the identification and delimitation of degraded (or potentially degraded) areas requiring further in-depth investigation using instrumental analysis.

The subsequent instrumental analysis was conducted using a specialized penetrometer, known as a Resistograph, an instrument that measures variations in wood density, thereby detecting defects and deterioration such as cracks, splits, and areas where the wood is decayed or in the process of decay. Additionally, the wood species were identified through small core samples extracted using a Pressler drill and subsequent macroscopic analysis based on dichotomous keys.
