Completion of the MigliorArTi Project

The project “Seismic Improvement of the Arcari Library in Tirano – MigliorArTi” has been completed. This intervention is part of a broader strategy outlined by Fondazione Cariplo, which co-financed it under the 2017 call “Cultural Heritage at Risk.”
The project was aimed at reducing seismic risk, building upon activities focused on the understanding, conservation, and enhancement of cultural heritage. Moreover, it allowed for the development of innovative design approaches, such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) modeling, applied in the specific context of interventions on cultural heritage assets.
The design of the seismic improvement intervention was based on thorough survey campaigns, including laser-scanner surveys, which enabled the attainment of a high level of knowledge (LC3). The seismic vulnerability assessment showed critical issues both in terms of material degradation and structural inefficiency, providing the foundation for the subsequent seismic improvement design.
Particularly significant was the application of the BIM methodology. A detailed BIM model was developed based on the laser-scanner survey, integrated with all information derived from other research and investigative activities, and completed with the results of the vulnerability assessment. The model was effectively used not only during the design phase but also during execution, being progressively updated with all construction details and minor adjustments required to meet the operational needs of the construction site. At the end of the works, a fully implemented “as-built” BIM model (LOD F) was available, from which all relevant information could be quickly and effectively extracted to produce the Technical-Scientific Report and the Conservation Plan.
Through this experimental and innovative approach, it was possible to develop and propose a reproducible operational methodology applicable to cultural heritage assets, both locally and at a broader provincial and regional scale. Due to its innovative content, the project was presented at the 34th International Conference on Science and Cultural Heritage in Bressanone and is currently being published in Ingenio, an online technical journal.
