Completed the structural testing operations of the new bridge over Val di Pai
5 October 2017
The structural testing operations carried out by FOPPOLI MORETTA e ASSOCIATI srl for the new bridge over Val di Pai, along Provincial Road No. 7 connecting Morbegno to Gerola Alta in the Bitto Valley, have been completed today.
The structure, of fundamental importance for improving road accessibility in the Val Gerola, had already been opened to traffic on a provisional basis following the successful completion of static load tests conducted on July 6. The static tests allowed verification of displacements at key points of the bridge under various loading conditions, using 10 trucks each with a total weight exceeding 40 tons.
Testing then continued on July 28 with the execution of a dynamic characterization test. Nineteen accelerometers were installed to measure vibrations induced in the bridge by passing traffic and a dedicated test vehicle. The data collected were subsequently analyzed to identify the main vibration “modes” of the structure, thus creating a sort of dynamic “identity card” for the bridge.
The complete set of measured data provides essential information both for comparison with the design assumptions and for future compliance checks during the service life of the structure.
With the conclusion of these assessments and verifications, FMeA issued the bridge’s final structural testing certificate, officially making it fully and safely available for public use.
