Completed seismic vulnerability assessment of the financial offices building in Bolzano

After 90 days of work, the Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of the Financial Offices Building in Piazza del Tribunale, Bolzano, was delivered yesterday. The assessment was carried out on behalf of the Italian State Property Agency – Regional Directorate of Trentino Alto Adige.

The first phase of the activity involved a detailed analysis of the current state of the building, carried out in accordance with the “knowledge pathway” outlined by D.P.C.M. 09/02/2011. The analysis was structured into geometric survey, historical review of events and interventions, assessment of materials, construction techniques, and conservation status, as well as mechanical characterization of the building materials, foundations, and supporting soil. The investigations were conducted to reach Knowledge Level 3 (LC3, the highest level provided), thus allowing the application of a confidence factor FC = 1 (the minimum value) and enabling the assessment to be carried out as accurately as possible with respect to the building’s actual condition.

Using the acquired diagnostic data, a structural model fully representing the building—constructed with a mixed technique of reinforced concrete and masonry—was then implemented. Modal and linear dynamic analyses were performed on the model, providing the seismic risk indicator in terms of ground acceleration, which, when compared with the regulatory values, allowed the technical evaluation of the building’s vulnerability to be expressed.
