Bridge safety seminar in Tirano

The AIPnD (Italian Association for Non-Destructive Testing – Monitoring and Diagnostics), in collaboration with UNCEM (National Union of Municipalities, Communities and Mountain Authorities) and the Order of Engineers of Sondrio, with the technical and organizational support of Foppoli Moretta and Associati, promoted an engaging seminar entitled “Effectiveness of Non-Destructive Testing Techniques for the Assessment of Bridge Safety”, which was held on Wednesday, 14 November, in Tirano.

The day, which was primarily technical in nature, was highly successful, with over ninety professionals in attendance, about half of whom came from different regions of Italy. The event was also attended by several officials from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport based in Rome, as well as engineers from the Fire Brigade from Imperia. During the seminar, the national presidents of AIPnD and UNCEM signed an agreement committing the two organizations to collaborate on consultancy, training, and communication activities regarding infrastructure safety.

A distinctive feature of the seminar was the combination of traditional classroom-based training in the morning with a practical session held directly at the Adda River bridge in Stazzona. Participants were thus able to observe firsthand both the practical explanations and the execution of selected non-destructive testing techniques deemed most effective for this specific sector.

Events like this, valuable both technically and educationally, represent important steps towards raising awareness of the potential of non-destructive testing. They constitute not only a sound technical practice but also, as tragically demonstrated by the events in Genoa, an essential measure to prevent disasters that cannot and should not be considered “unforeseeable.”
