BEGINNING OF THE RECOVERY WORKS OF THE CHURCH OF S. IGNAZIO IN PONTE IN VALTELLINA

Sant'Ignazio is located in the historic center of the town; the complex (annexed to the nearby Jesuit convent), in the Napoleonic period became property of the municipality of Ponte in Valtellina which still owns it.

The church has always been used for religious celebrations, concerts and events (such as the famous Ponte in Fiore) favored in this by the excellent acoustics that are recognized. In recent times, however, the significant cracking and deformation phenomena that have been highlighted have progressively limited its use. Furthermore, some specific damaging events, the fall of lightning on the bell tower and the collapse of a fragment of the decorated plaster of the vault, have forced local intervention with an emergency procedure. The Municipality can now finally organically tackle the safety, static consolidation and seismic improvement of the church thanks to funding received in part from the Cariplo Foundation and in part from the Province of Sondrio.

This first complex phase of intervention, designed by our company, will last 14 months and will involve the consolidation of the bell tower and the restoration of its facades (in addition to the reactivation of the bell concert), the consolidation of the roof and vaults of the hall, the restoration of the main facade and the pilot restoration site of the frescoes of the nave (planned in the first span).

The intervention will allow the building to be used safely again, although much remains to be done to complete the restoration of the magnificent interior frescoes, attributed to Cesare Ligari and Giovanni Battista Muttoni.
