ART’21 – 13th International Conference on non-destructive investigation and microanalysis for the diagnostics and conservations of cultural and environmental heritage

The 13th edition of the international conference Art’21, focused on non-destructive testing and microanalysis for the diagnosis and conservation of cultural and environmental heritage, has been held in these days. The event had originally been scheduled for last autumn in Buenos Aires, but due to the well-known pandemic-related issues, it was first postponed by a year and eventually held online.

Eng. Dario Foppoli was invited as a key speaker and delivered a presentation entitled “Diagnostic and Analytic Methods for the Study of the Structural Behavior of Historical Towers”, in which he illustrated the specific methodologies used in Italy for the conservation-oriented analysis of slender buildings, particularly towers and bell towers. The Italian experience is certainly exemplary at a global level, as it is an established practice in Italy that the assessment of a building’s state of conservation, as well as the evaluation of its structural and seismic vulnerability, is based on a thorough historical, geometric, and material understanding, allowing for an analytical identification of both the conservation status and the structural behavior of historic buildings. The presentation also emphasized that the artistic importance of such structures requires careful consideration of the type and extent of testing techniques applied, in relation to conservation needs.

The presentation generated significant interest, resulting in numerous questions during the final Q&A session, aimed at exploring in greater detail the methodologies presented, which were illustrated through a series of case studies drawn from our company’s experience.
