Sondrio railway station pedestrian underpass - structure

The project focused on the question of the creation of a transport interchange in Sondrio and the requalification of the areas around the station implementing a pedestrian pathway under the passenger station, platforms and via Tonale, connecting Piazza Bertacchi (the station square) with the bus station, multi-storey car park and school campus south of the rail line.

Differing construction techniques were necessary due to the restricted space allowable for working near the station.

The “tube push” method was necessary for the construction of the underpass, because the 4 tracks were mantained in use. The foundations of the passenger building were carried out through the temporary support of the building façade by using geotechnical R.C. poles.

All work was carried out without interrupting normal rail traffic flow, full functioning of the ticket office and station services in general.

To complete the project, access roofing was installed.
The escalator covering at the entrance in Piazzale Bertacchi was made in steel and glass sheeting secured with circular fasteners.
The access point on the second entrance was made in steel with a wooden beam structure.
