“Sociale” theatre in Sondrio - analysis
The 19th century structure was built in masonry while the 20th century section in reinforced concrete. So, prior to structural execution, it was necessary to gather all relevant information concerning the characteristics of the masonry and that in reinforced concrete which was to be restored.
Mechanical sub vertical continuous coring was used to analyse the masonry foundation dimension and geometry. The extracted coring was catalogued by depth and stratigraphy. Video camera work was also carried out to further analyse the structure and showed up the dimension of discontinuous sections and structural cavities. Flat jack testing (ASTM C1196-09), allowed the evaluation of the stress levels in masonry. The following tests with parallel flat jacks (ASTM C1197-09), allowed the non destructive determination of the characteristics of the masonry and the compressive strength.
For the diagnosis of the reinforced concrete, coring was carried out in the reinforced concrete structures which was then compression tested in the laboratory (UNI-EN 12404-1), rebound tests were carried out on site (UNI-EN 12404-2), ultrasound propagation velocity (UNI-EN 12404-4) carried out on both coring and the structure itself (used in the combined correlated method application Son-Reb) and rebar survey through electro-magnetic testing (BS 1881-204 1988). In compliance with the Italian Structural Code the investigation led to a level LC3 knowledge.
