Milan Central railway station

Milan Central railway station

Previous Next

Diagnostic analysis was carried out on the west wing of the station with the aim of characterizing the structure for the following structural re-organization required at track level and first floor.

The diagnosis was foreseen as follows:

  • coring for foundation depth and beam thickness;
  • coring of masonry to determine typology (brickwork masonry, reinforced concrete pillars, etc.) investigation into the presence of rebars through magneto-metric testing and testing of material homogeneity through endoscopic video inspection;
  • localization of reinforced concrete structures inside masonry through magneto-metric inspection;
  • concrete coring for internal section homogeneity testing, depth of carbonatation and material strength (through laboratory tests);
  • flat jack testing for the determination of masonry stress and parallel flat jacks for measurement of masonry deformability and compression strength.

In the “train gallery”, it was necessary to analyze the structure where the new Sky Lounge Bar glass roofing would stand, thus the structure between the “train gallery” and the “mosaic gallery” was tested with endoscopic video inspection that allowed the evaluation of sizing and composition of the walls.
