Seismic Improvement of Arcari Library at Tirano
The ancient mansion of the Grana-Pievani household, including the rights to the church of San Giacomo and the small square in front of it, were given to Tirano Municipality in 1970 with the obligation to guarantee its maintenance and conservation and to place in it the venue of the Civic Library.
Subsequent vicissitudes led to the current use of these buildings mainly as a warehouse for the library. However, the municipality intends finally to implement the commitments contained in the legacy through an overall valorization policy of the buildings.
This is the framework of the project "Seismic Response Improvement of Arcari Library in Tirano - MigliorArTi" funded under the Cariplo Foundation call and related to "Risk Assessment for Cultural heritage". In order to develop a strategy aimed at the reduction of seismic hazard, the project was drafted based on a detailed diagnostic analysis that made it possible to understand the structural behavior of the buildings, assess their criticalities and increase their level of safety.
A geometric survey was carried out via laser-scanner and exhaustively processed with the main detail level implementing a BIM model (Building Information Modelling), used as basis for the following design stages.
The diagnostic activities were articulated in historical analysis of the events and interventions, evaluation of material, construction techniques and state of preservation, mechanical characterization of materials, foundations and soil. Due to the information and data obtained, it was possible to reach the Level of Knowledge LC3 (the highest level defined in Italian regulations), proper basis for the following careful assessment of seismic vulnerability of the buildings. It was so possible to draft the necessary interventions to be carried out on Grana-Pievani Manor: damages repairs, stiffening of existing metal encircles, stiffening and consolidation of roofing and insertion of metal tie-rods on the bell tower, leading to a significant increase in seismic safety level.
The three-dimensional parametric model implemented, containing all the design information, will be further implemented with the executive information and will allow drawing up an adequate conservation plan for the future management of the building.
